Boulder Deck

Rise beyond the sea

University project - University of Genoa - 2026

The Project

The project begins with a reference image selected for its strong sense of verticality and for the way physical activity is integrated into the architectural space.

It became the starting point for exploring a dynamic and unconventional environment shaped around vertical development. Through its analysis, several key elements emerged, including fragmented geometries, projecting surfaces, the use of wood, and the relationship between material, function, and movement. These elements formed the basis of the concept.

The same principles were then reinterpreted within a nautical context, using Artefact by Nobiskrug as a case study. Its central vertical space and unconventional interior configuration provided the ideal setting for adapting the concept to a yacht environment.

Concept

The partial opening of the decks creates a triple-height volume, transforming the stairwell into a central element of the composition and visually connecting the different levels while emphasizing the sense of verticality.

From this analysis, the initial concept sketch was developed, reinterpreting the stairwell as an active vertical space. The climbing wall is not conceived as an independent feature, but as an integral part of the architecture and the onboard experience.

The concept is therefore adapted to the yacht’s structural and functional constraints while maintaining a strong focus on movement, verticality, and continuity between space and function.
