Ponteluce

Interior Design Concept for the Minoan Lines Cruise Olympia/Europa Ferry

University project - University of Genoa - 2026

The Project

Ponteluce is a university interior design project developed for the Minoan Lines Europa/Olympia cruise ferry, with the aim of rethinking selected communal areas on decks 10 and 11.

The project is set within a Mediterranean context, characterized by frequent crossings, a strong tourist presence, and intensive use of shared spaces.

The proposal aims to improve the onboard experience for different user groups including families, workers, and truck drivers through more welcoming and flexible environments that maintain a strong connection with the marine landscape. The project therefore focuses on spaces for relaxation, social interaction, and entertainment, strengthening the relationship between interior, exterior, and the overall experience of travel.

Concept

The concept is built around the water surface as a central feature of the composition. Rather than serving as a purely aesthetic reference, water actively shapes light, perception, and the overall experience of the space, giving rise to a fluid and dynamic design language closely connected to the maritime context.

A key feature of the project is the Pavilion, conceived as a lightweight structure that creates a transition between interior and exterior. Its filtering membrane modulates natural light and generates constantly changing shadows, enhancing the atmospheric quality of the space. The Brazilian Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 served as an important reference for exploring the relationship between water, light, lightness, and structure.
